Is it better to book direct instead of Booking or Airbnb

Booking platforms are convenient and solved a real problem: trust between strangers. But they charge a commission that somebody pays, and that somebody is always the guest, either directly or through a higher rate.

What actually changes

Price. Platform commission typically runs between ten and twenty per cent of the booking value. Part of that margin can come back to the guest as a lower direct rate, or become included services.

Flexibility. Cancellation terms on platforms are standardised. Direct, they can be agreed, particularly for longer stays or multiple bookings.

Communication. On a platform, messages route through the system and answers arrive when they arrive. Direct, you speak to whoever runs the property.

Unusual requests. A cot, a late arrival, garage access, adjoining units for a group. These do not fit a platform form and get resolved in one conversation when booking direct.

What you give up

This deserves saying plainly. The platform provides an intermediary if something goes wrong, a verified review system and a standardised refund process. Booking direct, that safety net is absent.

Which is why direct booking makes sense when the property is identifiable: a visible company name and VAT number, a published national identification code, a real address, a phone that answers.

When it genuinely pays

Stays over three nights, multi-unit bookings, business travel needing an invoice, and anyone with a request that does not fit into a form field.

For a single night in low season the difference is marginal and the platform stays convenient.
