Driving to Naples and staying in the centre, what you need to know
Driving to Naples and sleeping in the centre works fine if your parking is covered and booked before you leave home. In Chiaia the garage at Vico Santa Maria a Cappella Vecchia 8b is open 24 hours, 3 metres of clearance, 100 spaces.
Driving to Naples worries people more than it should. Yes, there is traffic. Yes, there are scooters. But driving through the city is not the real problem. The problem is what to do with the car once you arrive. Solve that before you leave home and the rest is an ordinary journey.
Is it worth driving to Naples at all?
It depends on what you plan to do afterwards. If your trip is Naples only, the car sits still and costs money. Metro, funiculars and taxis cover everything inside the city.
If the Amalfi Coast, Cilento, Paestum, Pompeii and Herculaneum are all on the same trip, a car makes sense. The alternatives exist but they are slow, and with children or luggage they turn into work.
A simple rule: bring the car if you leave the city on at least two days out of five. Otherwise take the train.
Which route into Chiaia?
From the north, the A1 to the junction with the Tangenziale di Napoli, the city ring road. From the south, the A3 and then either the ring road or Via Marina.
The easiest way into Chiaia is the Fuorigrotta exit. From there you take the Quattro Giornate tunnel, come out at Piazza Sannazaro and follow the sea along Via Caracciolo. After about 2.5 kilometres you reach Piazza Vittoria, and Piazza dei Martiri is two minutes further.
The waterfront stretch is wide and flows well, without the bottlenecks of the historic centre. This is why Chiaia is the easiest of the central districts to reach by car.
Do not set your navigator to the lane itself. Set it to Piazza dei Martiri and follow the garage signs, which are 200 metres away.
How do the ZTL zones work?
Naples does not have one restricted zone but several, each with its own rules. The historic centre has daytime and weekly hours, the waterfront has pedestrian stretches, and Chiaia has an evening ZTL that is active in specific time slots and on specific dates, usually tied to weekends and holidays.
The practical point is one: check the city council or ANM website the day before you arrive, and do not rely on information from six months ago. Send your plate number to the property when you book. If the garage sits inside a regulated area, the property can register it for access authorisation.
ZTL fines arrive by post months later, with notification fees added. The five minute check is worth it.
Where do I leave the car in central Naples?
There are three options.
Blue lines on the street. Hourly rates, very little availability in Chiaia in the evening, no protection. Possible for one night, not for a stay.
Private paid garage. Common in every central district, priced between 25 and 40 euros a day. Some close at night, others have height limits of 2 metres or less. Check before you go, not when you arrive.
The garage of the building you sleep in. This is what removes the problem entirely. You arrive, drive in, go upstairs. The Garage Santopaolo at Vico Santa Maria a Cappella Vecchia 8b, in the same building as Santopaolo Boutique Apartments, has 3,000 square metres under cover, 100 spaces, 3 metres of clearance, 24 hour access and continuous CCTV. The guest rate is 30 euros a day, with a weekly rate on request. Updated September 2026.
Can I bring an SUV, a van or a minibus?
With 3 metres of clearance, every size of SUV fits, along with family vans, minibuses up to 9 seats and light trucks. It is the highest clearance among garages in the district, where the norm is between 1.90 and 2.20 metres.
Campervans and anything above 3 metres do not fit. If you travel by campervan, parking has to be found outside the centre.
The garage also has a covered loading and unloading area, useful if you arrive with luggage for a whole family or with equipment.
Is the car safe overnight in Naples?
On the street, as in any large European city, there is some risk. In a closed garage with CCTV there is not. The entire floor is covered by cameras running 24 hours, access is controlled and the building is closed to outside traffic.
The same applies to motorcycles and scooters, which on the street in Naples are the most exposed thing you can own.
How do I get around with the car parked?
From Piazza dei Martiri, the Chiaia stop on Metro Line 6 is a 5 minute walk. From the same square, the Chiaia funicular up to Vomero is 10 minutes and Piazza Amedeo station on Line 2 is 15 minutes.
The historic centre is a 25 minute walk along Via Chiaia and Via Toledo, or two metro stops. The Caracciolo waterfront is 400 metres away.
For Capri, Ischia and Procida, the Beverello pier is 10 minutes by taxi or Metro Line 6 to Municipio.
How long from the motorway to Chiaia?
From the Napoli Nord toll booth, about 30 minutes in normal traffic. In peak hours, 8 to 10 in the morning and 5 to 8 in the evening, it can reach 50. From the Fuorigrotta exit to Piazza dei Martiri is 10 minutes when traffic flows.
If you arrive after 9 in the evening the waterfront route is almost always clear.
The most useful advice: if you can choose, arrive between 2 and 4 in the afternoon or after 9 at night. Those are the hours when the city is calmest to cross.
