Where to eat in Chiaia, from coffee to dinner

Chiaia is where Neapolitans go for dinner when they want to eat well without travelling. That shapes the neighbourhood: few places built for tourists, many built for people who come back.

The areas

Around Piazza dei Martiri. High concentration, long-established names and serious restaurants. This is the most expensive part of the district.

Via Ferrigni and its side streets. Density peaks here, with trattorias, wine bars and seafood places. The inner side streets hide the better options.

The seafront. Views across the bay and Castel dell’Ovo. You pay for the position, though some places hold up regardless.

Vico Belledonne and around. Aperitivo territory, alive from late afternoon.

What to expect on price

Chiaia costs consistently more than the historic centre. A mid-range seafood dinner with wine easily exceeds what the same meal costs in a trattoria in the inner districts.

In exchange, quality is more consistent and the chance of landing in a tourist trap is lower, because the clientele is local and unforgiving.

Pizza

The most famous long-standing pizzerias are in the historic centre, not in Chiaia. But the neighbourhood has very good pizzerias that are less besieged, and for dinner without a two hour wait they are the sensible choice.

Immediately around Vico Santa Maria a Cappella Vecchia

Several well known names sit two or three minutes away on foot, among them Rivalta, L’Antiquario, Terrazza Calabritto and Antichi Sapori Partenopei. Piazza dei Martiri, with its cluster of venues, is seventy metres away.
